Covid-19’s Impact on Education
Introduction
No one would have guessed
that a great catastrophe would come and affect people without disparity. The covid-19 pandemic is the first and foremost of all the health crisis. The government officials are confusing
of closing and opening the schools or colleges due to the increased and decreased number of cases. This makes the dilemma.
Teaching and exams are moving online and many exams have been simply cancelled. It makes an uncertainty. The severe short- term
disruption is felt by many families. Not only have these disruptions a short- term issue, but also can had long-term
consequences for affected
people.
Impact on Education: Schools
The primary goal of education is that it increases a student’s ability. Going to school is the best public policy tool available to raise skills. While school time, a student can be having fun and can raise his/her social skills and awareness. There are students in India who come to school just because they get food. The great mid-day meal scheme has helped many children who couldn’t bring their food from home to get nutrition. But now due to covid-19 most governments have decided to temporarily close the schools to reduce the impact of covid-19. Later it was reopened and closed again. It makes a great disruption. Beyond the staggering impact on human life, covid-19 had gradually disrupted access to education in India, with 247 million primary and secondary school students out of school. It has affected a large number of students across states, districts, religion, gender, etc. The shutting down of schools and the decision of shifting traditional classrooms into digital platforms is not only increasing learning inequality among children, but also pushing a large number of children out of school due to the digital divide.
Impact on Education: Families
As schools and colleges are shut across India, because of covid-19,
there is no boundary between
bedrooms and classrooms
of children in the country. The routine has gone
erratic, the playtime
is zero and there is no difference
between home and school times.
While
there is a lot of talk about online classes,
it is only limited to a small number of schools and colleges. There are lots of students who didn’t own
the resources to attend the online classes.
Many are struggling to obtain the gadgets
required. The online classes are also a great crisis to nuclear
families. Because they don’t have the habit of spending
24 hours with their child. For ex., the child is out for school and the parents are in separate
jobs. In such kind of families, children are not used to spending days at home without school and friends.
Assessments:
The closure of schools, colleges and universities not only interrupts the teaching for students around the world, the closure also coincides with a key assessment period and many exams have been cancelled and postponed. The covid-19 lockdown has forced us to take a fresh look how exams are conducted. The shift to online teaching has highlighted the problems in assessment system. Redundant exams only build up stress and no new understanding for students. The lockdown and the shift have forced us to look at the student teacher dynamic, the examination system and analyze the shortcomings. The entire system has come under the microscope where marks are useless and it is the understanding of the curriculum that has taken precedence.
Conclusion:
We can sense the great damage done to the field of education in recent years because of covid-19. We are not ready for this catastrophe, but it came, so we have to go through
the crisis together.
We should think of the ways to undertake the situation and providing education to every child amid the pandemic in the future to aid the upcoming
generation.
